Overview
Dates: Summer 2017 to May 2018
During my time at Lewis & Clark I assisted Dr. Mohamed Anber with research on the nature of quark deconfinement in extreme conditions. We published a paper in the journal of high energy physics which is available here.
My Role
I designed and implemented the simulation software that would be producing all the data for the research. Dr Anber took care of the underlying theory, and I put it into practice.
Process
I wrote my simulations in Python, and refined them so that they could run on a supercomputer. We used the Portland State University’s Coeus Cluster. I wrote my code to utilize all 2500 cores of the compute nodes the cluster offered. Doing this achieved a speedup of around 70X.
Outcome
As mentioned above, Dr. Anber and my research was published in JHEP. Additionally, I wrote my senior thesis on the specific task of writing the simulations and their parallelization, which earned me departmental honors in physics. Please email me if you’d like to read it!
